You're invited to the Manitoba Pasture Tour - August 3rd & 4th, 2011

Our theme is "Business and the Environment - Making it Work on Your Farm"

This 2 day tour will have something for everyone. We have lined up stops to look at: heifer development, management intensive grazing, stockyards, using stock dogs, poly cropping, swath grazing, bale grazing, corn grazing, burning for tree and ground juniper control, and much, much more.

The tour is a great deal at $100 for producers, and $175 for industry! You will be provided with accommodation (double occupancy), meals, the tour and evening workshops.

AGENDA

Wednesday, August 3
9:30 am – Buses depart Victoria Inn Hotel
Shilo Military Base – A quick stop to learn about the military’s long presence in Manitoba.
Yellow Quill Project – A 2080 acre twice-over grazing system since 1999, aspen and ground juniper control
thru burning and grazing, litter studies and yield records.

LUNCH – Criddle/Vane Homestead Heritage Park
Two descendants of the Criddle/Vane family will tell us about this interesting pioneer family.
Winter Feeding Systems – Wayne Heinrichs has taken feeding to a new level. Combining swath, corn
and bale grazing, he has cut costs and labor requirements.
Pasture System – Maple Lake Stock Farms – A 320 acre native twice-over rotational grazing system using
tall fescue paddocks to extend the grazing season. Rotationally grazed since 2004.

REFRESHMENTS & SUPPER – Poplar View Stock Farm
Boehringer Presentation: Marketing pre-vaccinated calves – Express Verified and BI Prime Protection, vaccination programs that add value.
Workshops – Rotate to each workshop for 30 minutes each (See back panel for details)

Thursday, August 4
7:30 am – Buses depart Victoria Inn Hotel
Heifer Development and Embryo Transfer- John & Adele Popp will discuss the importance of
restricted heifer gain for fertile, long-lived cows. Embryo transfer is an interesting side of their business
that complements their farm’s objectives.

Grazing yearlings and using a Grazing Chart-Gerald Bos, the 2010 Grazier of the Year, has been
honing his skills as a grazier for a number of years. The farm, once a mix of grain, timothy hay and
cattle has moved their focus to forage and cattle.

LUNCH – Cattlex – Tour of facilities.
Multi-species Grazing and Stock Dog Demo-Brian Greaves can make more profit per acre when
using sheep and cattle and save time having highly trained help—leave it to the dogs!
Poly Cropping – Interest in this concept is increasing – learn more about better soil health, good
forage yields & quality.
Brandon Research Station – A new twist on swath grazing annuals: can it be used to increase
the longevity of your alfalfa stands?

Back to Victoria Inn, buses head home.

WORKSHOPS

Electric Fencing— Hans Rindlishbacher (former MAFRI employee) leads this informative session on
fencing—do’s, don’ts & tricks of the trade will make your fences hot, durable & cost effective.
Watering Systems—Carl Driedger’s (Sundog Solar) years of experience will help you build a watering
system that meets your needs. Proper sizing & set-up will ensure years of reliable service from your
system.
Order Buying—Gord Ransom (Don Ransom Livestock Ltd.) will show you how he picks cattle. Can you improve your herd to suit what the market is demanding?

Registration fee:
Producers: $100*
Industry: $175*
Fee includes: meals, tour, workshops and accommodations (one night based on double occupancy)
Single rooms are an additional $50.
