JOB TITLE: Feed Processing Manager

DEPARTMENT: College of Agriculture & Bioresources (Animal and Poultry Science, Canadian Feed Research Centre; CFRC)

STATUS: 1.0 FTE; Permanent

COMPETITION NO.:  11064-M

SALARY INFORMATION: The salary range is $56,361 to $88,064 per annum (Managerial, Phase 2).  The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The purpose of the Feed Processing Manager is to ensure that the CFRC functions at its full potential by providing management support within a strong research context.  The manager plays an integral role in the delivery of feed processing technology in research programs and participates in planning and developing the strategic direction of the CFRC pilot research line and the pilot plant laboratory.

NATURE OF WORK: The manager reports to the Research Chair in Feed Processing Technology.  Relationships are varied and include collaboration with faculty and an industry manager; provision of advice and training to national and international research clients; and delivery of training for postgraduate and undergraduate students

The work may be stressful given the high volume of work, complex problems, tight deadlines and need for accuracy.  The impact of decisions is considerable, as the position is responsible for ensuring that experimental feeds are suitable for research projects and that they are prepared in compliance with quality and safety standards.

The facility is highly automated, but some manual labour is required with respect to lifting and moving of feed inputs, finished diets, equipment and maintenance of the facilities.  The work involves exposure to grain dust, hot corrosive materials and some biological materials requiring certification for handling and transportation.  The noise and ambient temperatures in the feed mill can be considerable and may require use of protective gear.

The manager is responsible for the supervision of the feed mill operator.

  • User-fee billing process is developed and implemented.
  • The Canadian Feed Research Centre operations budget is managed effectively and in accordance with university policies and procedures.

  • Timely initiation of payments to vendors.

Enable Research, Teaching and Scholarly Activity

  • The strategic direction of the CFRC pilot research line and the pilot plant laboratory is planned and developed in alignment with university and college priorities.
  • Facility is well-maintained and functional.
  • Research protocols for feed processing are developed and implemented.
  • Effective engagement with research clients and students in designing experiments and evaluation of research results.
  • Anticipate and respond to opportunities for research and innovation.
  • Record keeping is meticulous.
  • Remain current in the field of feed processing research and technologies.
  • Participate as a member of the scientific team as appropriate.
  • Deadlines are routinely met.

Risk Management

  • Identify, assess and manage risk in planning research projects and ongoing operations.
  • Experimental feeds are suitable for research projects and are prepared in compliance with quality and safety-related standards and procedures.
  • Knowledge of University safety protocols and policies is applied appropriately and communicated to others.
  • The safety and well-being of students training in the CFRC is ensured.
  • Practices and protocols meet and exceed requirements for good clinical laboratory practices:  HACCP; CFIA; ISO 9000.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:  A M.Sc. degree in a related discipline (food science/engineering/animal nutrition) is preferred.  A relevant combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Experience:  A minimum of five years of management experience relevant to this position, particularly in plant processes and equipment; ingredient functionality and the interaction with processing conditions; knowledge and accreditation in regulatory codes for food/feed manufacturing and labeling; supervision and coaching of staff; inventory maintenance and computer proficiency with Microsoft Office and feed mill operations software.

Skills: Expert administrative, organizational and project management skills. The ability to communicate and relate effectively with faculty, research scientists, students, and a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to recruit, manage and evaluate employees to effectively achieve desired outcomes.  Ability to manage competing interests, projects and deadlines.  Tact, diplomacy, good judgment and conflict resolution skills.  Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and quality assurance.
